In November 2003, Hospice of the Chesapeake partnered with Brits-Hartbeespoort Hospice, a sister hospice in Sub-Saharan Africa, to raise funds for children and families affected by the AIDS crisis - an estimated 4.3 million people. The "Beads for Brits" Project was started at our children's bereavement camp, at which time 165 bracelets were made by tiny hands and big hearts. Proceeds from the sale of the bracelets went to help the patients and families of Brits Hospice, and soon the project grew to include other Hospice of the Chesapeake camps and retreats and volunteer gatherings. To date we have raised more than $20,000 through the sale of the bracelets! The bracelets you make are thus a "gift given twice" because they are received and treasured at the same time the money used to purchase them goes to this wonderful and worthy cause. No crafting experience is required to create the bracelets - all you need is a desire to help make a difference! Bracelets are $20.00 each. (If you are unable to purchase, your time donated to bracelet-making is equally appreciated.) Cash, checks, and credit cards will be accepted for bracelet sales.
