The Cheer Team is an expansion of the teen volunteer program at Hospice of the Chesapeake. Unlike the Lifetime Chronicles program volunteers, which visit patients for a specific goal to complete a patient journal, the Cheer Team members visit hospice patients on a weekly or bi-weekly basis, depending on the need. Cheer Team members provide outside contact, comfort, care and compassion to hospice patients on an as needed basis.
Students who are accepted into the Cheer Team program are trained and supervised by the teen volunteer program coordinator at Hospice of the Chesapeake. The students commit to one year of volunteer service. Upon completion of training most teenagers continue throughout high school. Student volunteer hours can be used for community service requirements.
Hospice of the Chesapeake's interdisciplinary team, consisting of physicians, nurses, social workers, certified nursing assistants, chaplains and volunteers, all refer their appropriate patients to the Cheer Team. The patients are assessed by Hospice of the Chesapeake's program coordinator and subsequently assigned to members of the Cheer Team.
Currently, there are 30 students participating in the Cheer Team program, involving two high schools: Severna Park High School in Severna Park and The Key School in Annapolis.
