March 19, 2008 - HOSPICE OF THE CHESAPEAKE LADIES AUXILIARY MAKE DONATION TO MANDRIN HOSPICE HOUSE MARIPOSA GARDEN

The John & Arloine Mandrin Chesapeake Hospice House in Harwood is the recipient of a $10,000 donation from the Ladies Auxiliary. The funds will be used to in the creation of a special Mariposa Garden at the center.

The Mandrin Mariposa Garden is designed to provide a respite for caregivers, a place of solitude and reflection for patients and a source of life-affirming connection to nature for the staff and volunteers of the Mandrin house. More than a place, the garden will be an experience, a part of the clinical care, bereavement services and counseling opportunities that Hospice of the Chesapeake provides our patients and their families. An important feature of the garden will be the memorial walk, highlighting the names of those lost by families, staff, volunteers and members of the community. Additionally, the garden will boast a water feature that will provide a soothing backdrop to this safe haven.

Beyond the physical and medical needs of our patients and their loved ones is a more spiritual need – to be able to step out of the care cycle and into a different space – a place of rest. While the Mandrin House provides a warm, caring atmosphere that feels almost just like home, there is a time when a patient, too weak to get beyond the walls of the house, still needs to have a change of “scenery.” The addition of the garden at the Mandrin House will provide that change, along with a serene and reflective space to provide comfort for families and caregivers.

February 6, 2008 - OFFICIAL ARTIST SELECTED FOR HOSPICE CUP XXVII RACE: 'VICTORY' BY RITA MCROY

Spinnakers flying hues of red, blue and orange invoke a feeling of intense challenge, passion and images of remembrance, as sailboats race for victory through white capped sea powered by the wind. This image, titled, "Victory," created by Annapolis-based artist, Rita McRoy, has been chosen to represent the 2008 Hospice Cup event. The oil painting was selected among several artwork entries by many talented artists, to serve as the official image of Hospice Cup XXVII, taking place in Annapolis, Maryland, on September 27, 2008.

"This painting was inspired by my passion to create a piece of art that represents not only the strength and drive of sail racing - but also an image to represent the people behind the scenes of hospice care, such as those who help others and the patients we remember," states artist Rita McRoy. "The title 'Victory' was chosen to represent those who assist others to live peacefully, without pain - and helping them make that final transition to victory."

Rita McRoy has a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree from Auburn University with a concentration in Visual Design. However, she says she is an artist by nature. McRoy, an Annapolis resident, has had a self-proclaimed obsession with painting since an early age, growing up in the "Old South" and watching her grandmother and father paint beautiful landscapes. McRoy incorporates her graphic artist training into her paintings, creating very uniquely designed images.

"We selected this painting by Rita McRoy, because it truly honored everyone involved in this event - from the imagery of the caregivers and patients to the sailboat racers themselves," states Hospice Cup, Inc., Executive Director, Karma O'Neill. "We believe that this painting will serve as a very powerful image for our event and its mission."

The image of the original painting will appear in promotional ads, t-shirts, and posters which will have exposure to regional sponsors and participants from the Washington, DC metro area, northern Virginia, Prince George's County, Montgomery County, Anne Arundel County, the Baltimore Metro area and beyond.

The original painting will also be donated to the 2008 Shore Party Auction following the Hospice Cup XXVII race to help raise funds for hospice services.

"Over the past several years, artwork chosen to be the annual Hospice Cup event image has included an array of mediums from photographs to oil paintings," states Hospice Cup, Inc. Board President, Cullen Murray. "However, they all have one thing in common, and that is conveying the passionate journey of the sailor."

Hospice Cup funds help pay the expenses not covered by Medicare or private insurance. These dollars enable the hospices to provide skilled compassionate care, comfort and dignity to the terminally ill, their families and friends, regardless of their ability to pay. Hospice enables patients to carry on alert, pain-controlled lives so their last days may be spent in comfort, at home or in home-like settings. Hospice care concentrates on care, not cure. Bereavement counseling and support groups are part of hospice services after the loss of a loved one.

To date, over $7 million dollars has been raised for the participating hospices since the race began. The annual event is a cooperative effort of Hospice Cup, Inc., numerous volunteers to support the hospices participating in the race, the Shearwater Sailing Club and the Storm Trysail Club.

The 2008 participating hospices currently include: Hospice of the Chesapeake, Capital Hospice, Montgomery Hospice, and Community Hospices. Each hospice must meet the standards of the National Hospice and Palliative Care Organization.

The Hospice Cup race is sanctioned by the Chesapeake Bay Yacht Racing Association (CBYRA) and counts for CBYRA season-long High Point competition. Hospice Cup, Inc. is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization chartered under the laws of the Commonwealth of Virginia, Maryland and the District of Columbia for the purposes of conducting a benefit yacht race and related events. Hospice Cup, Inc. is also a proud member of the National Hospice Regatta Alliance, www.hospiceregattas.org.

Additional information about the race can be found online at the official Hospice Cup web site www.hospicecup.org.
