July 20, 2004 - HOSPICE OF THE CHESAPEAKE HOSTS AMBASSADOR
FROM BRITS HOSPICE OF SOUTH AFRICA
Hospice of the Chesapeake President and CEO Erwin
Abrams announces the visit of Joan William, Administrator of Brits Hospice in South Africa
In December 2003,
Hospice of the Chesapeake partnered with Brits
Hospice under the auspices of Foundation for Hospices in Sub-Saharan
Africa (FHSSA), an organization designed to strengthen and expand
African hospice programs through partnerships with hospice programs
in the United States. Through this partnership, Hospice of the Chesapeake provides technical,
clinical and administrative advice, as well as development
assistance, to the three-year old Brits Hospice. As part of this
program, Hospice of the Chesapeake will host visitors
from Brits Hospice and members of the Hospice of the Chesapeake clinical staff will
visit Brits Hospice in Sub-Saharan Africa.
"Our respective boards have recognized that the AIDS pandemic is a subject which
compassionate Americans can not ignore. As a result, we have joined
other United States hospices to share
resources and expertise with African hospices," explains Mr. Abrams.
"It has been proven that with proper nutrition and education, it is
possible to stave-off the onset of full-blown AIDS in children," he
added.
During her stay, Mrs. Williams met with the staff in both Anne Arundel and
Prince George's counties to
exchange ideas about the budding partnership. She also toured The
Creston G. Tate and Betty Jane Tate Foundation Chesapeake Hospice House in
Linthicum, and visited the site where the new John & Arloine
Mandrin Hospice House will be built in Harwood. Her visit concluded
during the Open House celebration of the new Hospice of the Chesapeake headquarters in
Annapolis.
FHSSA matches hospice organizations based on complementary skills, programs, resources and
goals. Hospice of the Chesapeake is the only hospice
organization in the mid-Atlantic region participating in this
internationally renowned program.
Brits Hospice is located approximately 45 miles
outside of Johannesburg, in the northeast quadrant of South Africa.
In 2002, this hospice program served 102 patients, 62 of whom had an
HIV/AIDS diagnosis. HIV/AIDS has afflicted more than 25 percent of
the more than 250,000 people living in the region surrounding Brits
Hospice. Located in a part of the world where poverty, poor medical
resources, poor education and orphan families have reached epidemic
proportions, Brits Hospice relies completely upon private
contributions for its funding.

June 11, 2004 - HOSPICE OF THE CHESAPEAKE BREAKS GROUND FOR SECOND HOSPICE HOUSE
Community leaders, hospice families, volunteers and Hospice of the Chesapeake staff members gathered yesterday for a groundbreaking ceremony at the location of its second hospice house on 4.2 acres located at 3675 Solomons Island Road in Harwood.
"The new hospice house will provide compassion, dignity, and expert care for people and their families at the end of life when they will need it most," said Hospice of the Chesapeake President & CEO, Erwin Abrams. "This community has needed this option for a long time. The fact that it is finally becoming a reality is a tribute to the community and its recognition that the care of the dying is, and should always be, a top priority."
The John & Arloine Mandrin Hospice House, named after the parents of major hospice house donor Jim Mandrin, is scheduled to be complete by early 2005.
The Hospice House will be 5,700 square-foot home with eight patient rooms. This ideal size will offer excellent nurse staffing formulas at low operational costs, while still providing ample space to deliver high quality hospice care. It will offer several amenities, including a chapel, a meditation garden, a community room, and a kitchen where families will be encouraged to prepare and share meals. Families will be able to be with their loved ones 24 hours a day, 365 days a year.
Hospice of the Chesapeake currently provides the area's only residential hospice care at The Betty Jane and Creston G. Tate Foundation Chesapeake Hospice House, which opened in 1996. Located in Linthicum, this six-bed residence has had a continuing waiting list of 12-15 patients. Patients, regardless of the ability to pay, are admitted to the hospice residence because their illnesses require more intense care.
While the majority of hospice patients receive hospice care in their own homes, more than 400 patients and their families have utilized the existing hospice residence, in a spacious home-like setting where those with end-of-life illnesses receive 24-hour care and find dignity, peace and comfort.
The three-year capital campaign to build the Hospice House, create an endowment and establish funds for continuing hospice programs and services, has raised the amount needed to begin construction. Fundraising for operational needs, however, will be ongoing according to Marlene Prendergast, vice president of development for Hospice of the Chesapeake.
"We are very grateful to everyone who has helped make the John & Arloine Mandrin Hospice House possible," said Prendergast. "The support we have received - from many businesses, community groups and individuals alike - will help to make the Mandrin Hospice House a place of compassion and caring for our patients and their families."

December 1, 2003 - HOSPICE OF THE CHESAPEAKE
ANNOUNCES PARTNERSHIP WITH SOUTH AFRICAN HOSPICE
Hospice of the Chesapeake President Erwin E. Abrams
announced that his organization will partner with Brits Hospice
in South Africa, under the auspices of Foundation for Hospices in
Sub-Saharan Africa (FHSSA). Founded in 1999 and based in Liverpool,
New York, FHSSA is designed to strengthen and expand African hospice
programs through United States/African partnerships. The ultimate
goals are to increase public awareness of the issues, as well as sponsor
people-to-people and program-toprogram professional exchanges.
Through
this partnership, Hospice of the Chesapeake will provide technical,
clinical and administrative advice, as well as development
assistance, to the three-year old Brits Hospice. As part of
this program, a member of the Hospice of the Chesapeake clinical
team may visit Brits Hospice in the coming year, and Hospice
of the Chesapeake will host visitors from Brits Hospice in
the first half of 2004. "This is a unique and exciting opportunity for
us to help others by sharing all that we have seen and learned in our
25 years at Hospice of the Chesapeake," explains
Mr. Abrams. "Frankly, it's the right thing to do in the face of the world-wide
AIDS epidemic that will claim more than 5 million lives in the
coming year. "It's also an excellent opportunity for us, as a successful
and progressive hospice program, to learn about other approaches to caregiving," adds
Mr. Abrams. "As
funding sources and medical reimbursements shrink here in the United
States, it will be most interesting to learn about strategies developed
for low resource settings."
FHSSA matches hospice organizations based
on complementary skills, programs, resources and goals. Hospice of the
Chesapeake is the only hospice organization in the mid-Atlantic region
participating in this internationally renowned program. "We are thrilled
to have Hospice of the Chesapeake participate in this program because
of their high level of commitment to FHSSA and our goals," comments
FHSSA Coordinator Abigail Fowlkes Gutierrez. "In addition, Hospice
of the Chesapeake's success forging dynamic relationships and
collaborative efforts within its own community is something
that the agency can teach the Brits Hospice team so that they
can achieve similar success with their program."
Brits Hospice is located approximately 45 miles NNE of
Johannesburg, in the northeast quadrant of South Africa. In 2002,
this hospice program served 102 patients, 62 of whom had an HIV/AIDS
diagnosis. HIV/AIDS has afflicted more than 25 percent of the more than
250,000 people living in the region surrounding Brits Hospice. Located
in a part of the world where poverty, poor medical resources, poor education
