November 9, 2005 - "HOT DOGS FOR HOSPICE" RAISES MORE THAN $60,000

For more than a decade, spectators have seen the "Hot Dogs for Hospice" booth in downtown Annapolis during the October boat shows. This fundraising booth is the initiative of Jerry Klasmeier, a Hospice of the Chesapeake Foundation board member since 1995, who currently serves as the Vice-Chairman. Klasmeier is the Assistant Comptroller for the State of Maryland.

This year, nearly 50 volunteers spent nine days selling 1,800 hot dogs and 200 lbs. of pork barbecue and earned $6,000 for Hospice of the Chesapeake. Local supporters that made this event possible include: Annapolis Summer Garden Theatre, Cookie's Kitchen, Severn Graphics and Wagner's Food Service. During the past ten years, the hot dog booth has raised more than $60,000 for Hospice of the Chesapeake.

Although Klasmeier recently announced that he is hanging up his hot dog hat, he still dedicates his time to supporting the mission of Hospice of the Chesapeake. He thanks all of the volunteers throughout the years as well as the local business supporters.

Hospice of the Chesapeake President and CEO Erwin Abrams commented, "Jerry Klasmeier's unstinting dedication to Hospice of the Chesapeake and the community in which he lives, is demonstrated in his many giving acts. November 1, 2005 - HOSPICE OF THE CHESAPEAKE REACHES OUT TO THE COMMUNITY TO DISCUSS OPTIONS IN END-OF-LIFE CARE

November is National Hospice/Palliative Care Month, a time when care providers across the country are working to educate people about the range of issues regarding end-of-life care. Hospice of the Chesapeake will host a free living wills seminar, November 10, 2005 at 7:30 p.m. at 445 Defense Highway in Annapolis, to help people understand options for end-of life planning.

This local event is part of a broader national campaign launched by National Hospice and Palliative Care Organization (NHPCO) encouraging people to plan for the care they would want and to share their wishes with family and health care providers. One way to do this is by completing an advance directive, also known as a living will. Just as important, however, is talking about your wishes with family, dear friends, and health care professionals. These are important steps to make sure your wishes are honored should you face a serious or life-limiting illness.

The living wills seminar will address the importance of communicating your wishes to family and loved ones-early and often-and also suggest ways to help initiate these difficult discussions.

Throughout the month of November, organizations across the nation are hosting activities that focus on advance care planning. Hospice of the Chesapeake is committed to informing the community and local health care professionals about the benefits of hospice and palliative care and the importance of advance care planning.

"The end of a life is never easy. But we can take steps to make sure our wishes are honored and that our families receive support they need. The conversations we have with each other about our end-of-life decisions-what we want and what we do not want, the care we choose to receive, and the caregivers who provide it-are important questions that each of us should answer, regardless of age," said Erwin Abrams, president and CEO of Hospice of the Chesapeake. "Talk now, before a crisis, to ensure that family conflict or uncertainty about end-of-life treatment decisions don't make a difficult situation even more complicated."

NHPCO reports that one million patients were served by the nation's 3,300 hospice providers last year. Hospices helped these people live with dignity, comfort, and compassion. Hospice and palliative care programs provide pain-management, symptom control, psychosocial support, and spiritual care to patients, and their families. They also serve as important sources of information about care options.

To register for the living wills seminar, please call 443-837-1536. The seminar is free of charge, but space is limited. Additional information about hospice, palliative care, and advance care planning is available from Hospice of the Chesapeake by calling 800.745.6132 or by visiting www.hospicechesapeake.org.

September 12, 2005 - HOSPICE AWARDED MARYLAND NONPROFITS' STANDARDS FOR EXCELLENCE SEAL

Hospice of the Chesapeake has been certified under the Maryland Nonprofits' Seal of Excellence for its outstanding record of service to residents of Anne Arundel and Prince George's counties.

The Maryland Nonprofits' Standards for Excellence Program is designed to promote excellence and integrity in nonprofit organizations. As part of the Standards certification program, organizations voluntarily submit to a rigorous review of all aspects of their organization. The Standards go far beyond the minimum legal requirements by outlining how well-managed and responsibly-governed nonprofits should operate. Hospice of the Chesapeake has achieved this goal and was found to be exemplary.

The Seal of Excellence is a symbol representing trust in excellent leadership, management, fundraising, and financial practices. According to a recent public opinion poll, 85% of Marylanders asserted that whether or not a charity has a seal of approval for ethical standards and accountability given by a reputable association is an important factor in making giving decisions.

"Submitting to the scrutiny required for certification under the Standards of Excellence was an added challenge to Hospice of the Chesapeake, but it was a worthwhile process for us. This seal shows we have taken every step to ensure we're serving the community and operating in an ethical manner and we're proud to receive it. Hospice of the Chesapeake's work on behalf of the patients and families we serve exemplifies both our dedication to our cause and to meeting the highest standards of ethical practice. We will continue to strive for excellence in all we do," states Erwin Abrams, President and CEO of Hospice of the Chesapeake.

According to Peter V. Berns, Executive Director of Maryland Nonprofits, "organizations which are successful in the certification program should be commended for their commitment to excellence and integrity." Maryland Nonprofits encourages organizations to participate in the voluntary certification program because the Standards can help improve organizations. Berns adds, "with every new organization that meets the Standards, we move one step closer to the day when the public will feel confident its nonprofit organizations are acting ethically and are accountable in their program operations, governance, human resources, financial management and fundraising practices." The first of its kind in the nation, the Standards for Excellence program was developed by a team of volunteers from the state's nonprofit community.
