November 28, 2006 - HOSPICE OF THE CHESAPEAKE NURSES BECOME ELNEC TRAINERS
Hospice of the Chesapeake's community education nurses recently attended a continuing education seminar sponsored by the End-of-Life Nursing Education Consortium (ELNEC).
The community education nurses, Karen Bryant, RN, CHPN, Lucy Dobson, RN, and Marie Schafer, RN, BSN, participated in the intensive three-day training session in Sterling, Virginia during October. The nurses are now qualified to prepare other medical professionals to provide the comprehensive care important at the end of life.
The primary goal of the training program is to provide nursing continuing education providers with information on end-of-life and palliative care, and to provide resources for incorporating end-of-life and palliative care into programs and in-services. Among the topics covered during the ELNEC training included: nursing care at the end of life; pain and symptom assessment and management; cultural considerations; ethical issues; communication; loss, grief and bereavement; preparation for and care at the time of death; and achieving quality care at the end of life.
Programs, like ELNEC, enable clinical staff to provide the highest quality care. Hospice of the Chesapeake provides quality end-of-life care to all individuals and their loved ones, regardless of their ability to pay.

November 16, 2006 - HOSPICE OF THE CHESAPEAKE AND ROB LEVIT RELEASE "SONGS OF HEALING" CD
Hospice of the Chesapeake announces the release of "Songs of Healing," a CD of inspirational music from
renowned Anne Arundel County musician Rob Levit. The organization has paired with Levit, Artist-In-
Residence at the Maryland Hall for the Creative Arts, to create a tangible means of comfort and
relaxation for patients, caregivers and the community. Created especially for Hospice of the Chesapeake,
the album consists of 16 original works.
"The gift of music touches everyone, young or old, in good health and in bad," Erwin Abrams, president
and CEO of Hospice of the Chesapeake says. "We pride ourselves in offering the best quality end-of-life
care to patients, as well as spiritual and bereavement support to families, loved ones, and the community
at large. This project helps us in accomplishing that goal."
Levit ensured the CD would live up to its title by spending time with patients at the John & Arloine
Mandrin Chesapeake Hospice House before entering the studio to record the music. "This project has
been the most meaningful I have ever engaged in," he explains. "It has far exceeded my expectations
and fuses my creative talents with service to a wonderful organization."
The "Songs of Healing" CD is available for purchase from Hospice of the Chesapeake for a suggested
donation of $10. For more information, please contact Emily Wingate at 443-837-1537 or

November 10, 2006 - HOSPICE OF THE CHESAPEAKE OFFERS WAYS TO HELP A GREIVING FRIEND DURING THE HOLIDAYS
The holidays are quickly approaching. Many people look forward to yearly traditions, but some, especially those who have recently lost a loved one, may find it particularly difficult to cope.
Hospice of the Chesapeake bereavement counselors emphasize that the best way to help those who are grieving during the holidays is to let them know you care. They need to be remembered, and they need to know their loved ones are remembered, too.
Here are some other tips that grieving people have shared:
- Be supportive of the way your friend chooses to celebrate the holidays. Some may wish to follow traditions; others may choose to change their rituals.
- Offer to help with tangible tasks such as baking, cleaning, or decorating. Even simple tasks can be overwhelming while dealing with grief.
- Invite your friend to attend a religious service with you and your family.
- Offer to help with holiday shopping or share your favorite catalogs or on-line shopping sites.
- Invite your friend to your home for the holidays.
- Inquire if your friend is interested in volunteering with you during the holiday season. Doing something for someone else, such as helping at a soup kitchen or working with children, may help
him or her feel better about the holidays.
- Make a donation in memory of your friend's loved one, as a reminder that his or her special person is not forgotten.
- Remember to avoid telling your friend that he or she should be "over it;" grief is an individual process and there are no right or wrong ways to grieve.
- If your friend wants to talk about the deceased loved one or feelings associated with the loss, LISTEN. Don't worry about being conversational.. just listen.
- Remind the person you are thinking of him or her and the loved one who died. Cards, phone calls and visits are great ways to stay in touch.
Hospice of the Chesapeake is a valuable resource, and supports those who are struggling with grief and
loss. Hospice of the Chesapeake's Spiritual & Bereavement Care Center offers one-on-one grief counseling,
bereavement camps for children, teens and adults, and support groups designed to meet a variety of needs.

"National Hospice and Palliative Care Month provides us the opportunity to further educate the community
about the importance of hospice care and pay tribute to our 'faces of caring:' the doctors, nurses,
bereavement counselors and volunteers that support our mission of offering quality end-of-life care,"
said Erwin Abrams, president and CEO of Hospice of the Chesapeake.
"If you have a loved one who is in the final stage of life, I can think of no greater gift than to allow
hospice to work its magic and make those final days as comfortable, dignified and peaceful for both the
patient, their family and their friends," said Dick Wheeler of Hanover. Mr. Wheeler was the primary caregiver
for his wife, Kim, who was a patient with Hospice of the Chesapeake. He is a community outreach volunteer
and is currently training to be a patient care volunteer.
The National Hospice and Palliative Care Organization (NHPCO) reported that more than 1.2 million
patients were served by the nation's 4,000 hospice providers last year. Hospices helped these people live
with dignity, comfort, and compassion. Hospice and palliative care programs provide pain management, symptom
control, psychosocial support, and spiritual care to patients and their families. They also serve as important
sources of information about care options.

Hospice of the Chesapeake announces that chaplain Rev. Katherine James Klemstine, D.Min. earned her Doctorate
in Ministry (D.Min.) from Sancta Sophia Seminary in Tahlequah, Oklahoma.
For her dissertation project, Rev. Klemstine, D.Min. developed a workshop for hospice clinical and
spiritual care titled Spiritual Insights to Death: Comparing Clinical and Spiritual Descriptions of the
Dying Process. The project provided a comparison of a clinical description of the dying process to a
spiritual description of dying based on the esoteric teachings of diverse belief systems. One of the
primary goals of the project was to improve the competence of clinical and spiritual care providers when
assessing the spiritual care needs of hospice patients and their family members.
"Katherine is a talented and innovative visionary who blesses us and those she serves with her myriad gifts
for ministry. We are so very proud of her accomplishments and recognize that this is the beginning of many
milestones that will mark her noteworthy career," remarked Rev. Christine Kennedy, Vice President of Spiritual

August 31, 2006 - HOSPICE OF THE CHESAPEAKE HOSTS AMBASSADOR FROM BRITS HOSPICE OF SOUTH AFRICA
Hospice of the Chesapeake recently hosted a visit from Joan Williams, the fundraising and marketing administrator of its sister hospice, Brits Hospice,
located in South Africa.
For nearly three years, Hospice of the Chesapeake has partnered with Brits Hospice under the auspices of Foundation for Hospices in Sub-Saharan Africa (FHSSA),
an organization designed to strengthen and expand African hospice programs through partnerships with hospice programs in the United States. Through this
partnership, Hospice of the Chesapeake provides technical, clinical and administrative advice, as well as development assistance, to the five-year-old Brits Hospice.
Brits Hospice is located approximately 45 miles outside of Johannesburg, in the Northwest province of South Africa. Located in a part of the world where poverty,
poor medical resources, lack of education and orphan families have reached epidemic proportions, Brits Hospice relies completely upon private contributions for its funding.
During her stay, Mrs. Williams met with the Hospice of the Chesapeake staff to inform them of the resources necessary to provide hospice care in Sub-Saharan Africa. She
also visited the Creston G. Tate and Betty Jane Tate Foundation Chesapeake Hospice House in Linthicum, and the newly opened John & Arloine Mandrin Chesapeake Hospice House in Harwood.
Hospice of the Chesapeake presented Mrs. Williams with a donation of $2,050 for Brits Hospice. This amount will feed 332 people, at the cost of only $6.15 per person, for
one month in Sub-Saharan Africa. The money was raised through the "Beads for Brits" fundraising initiative, beaded bracelets made by children that attend our bereavement
programs, and also collected from the staff.

Community leaders, Hospice of the Chesapeake families, volunteers, donors and staff recently gathered to celebrate the dedication
of the John & Arloine Mandrin Chesapeake Hospice House, its second hospice residence, located in Harwood.
First Lady of Maryland Kendel S. Ehrlich commented on the building efforts. "It's so wonderful for me because it's the first project
[for which] I was actually at the groundbreaking and now I'm at the ribbon cutting. It's just a terrific project that's going to help
people in a very intimate, personal time in their life," said Mrs. Ehrlich.
The John & Arloine Mandrin Chesapeake Hospice House, built by Mandrin Homes, Ltd., is named after the
parents of lead capital campaign donor Jim Mandrin. The 5,700 square-foot home features eight private
patient rooms. This ideal size offers excellent nurse staffing formulas at low operational costs, while
still providing ample space to deliver high quality hospice care. Families are able to be with their
loved ones 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.
Jim Mandrin remarked during the dedication reception, "it's not a one-man band, it's a huge orchestra - we played really well together
and it's all up to the people that are to work here - this is their house."
The John & Arloine Mandrin Chesapeake Hospice House is located at 3675 Solomons Island Road in Harwood, Maryland. For more information on
the residence, please contact Mandrin Chesapeake Hospice House Team Leader Ann Marie Pessagno at 410-798-0791 or
