Ken Stanley and Mike Brady in Michael Stanley Children's Garden

Ken Stanley, left, stands with Michael Brady, CEO Hospice of the Chesapeake, right, at the entrance of the Michael Stanley Children’s Garden, which was officially dedicated to the memory of Stanley’s son on June 4 on Hospice of the Chesapeake’s John & Cathy Belcher Campus in Pasadena, Maryland.

The Hospice of the Chesapeake family joined with Ken Stanley and his family on June 4 to dedicate the Children’s Garden on the John & Cathy Belcher Campus in honor of Michael Stanley who passed away in 2018.

Michael, the beloved son of Ken, was an accomplished songwriter and poet. One such poem with a focus on the inspiration provided by mother nature adorns the entrance to the now named Michael Stanley Children’s Garden. Michael’s poem greets all visitors who wander the gardens seeking peace and comfort while visiting their loved ones at the Rebecca Fortney Inpatient Care Center as well as families returning to the gardens in remembrance of loved ones who have died.

Ken Stanley is a member of the Hospice of the Chesapeake Foundation Board of Directors as well as a longstanding and steadfast supporter of the nonprofit’s mission. Ken has shared his talent, time and treasure with the organization since 2004.

President and CEO Mike Brady stood before the pergola bearing Michael Stanley’s name and told the story of the garden’s beginnings. Thoughtfully and purposefully designed by Campion Hruby Landscape Architects to provide peace, comfort and tranquility for all those who visit, it is accentuated by brightly colored sculptures and swings to honor the children who have passed in the care of Hospice of the Chesapeake’s Chesapeake Kids program. Meandering walkways and paths provide a much-needed respite from the overwhelming challenges of serious illness and loss.

“It is a place of warmth and renewal, a special place of remembrance for families,” Brady said. “By honoring his son by sharing Michael’s words and legacy, Ken has helped not only his family find peace, but countless others as well.”
