Care for Veterans

In 2010, Hospice of the Chesapeake became very aware that at least 25 percent of our patient population had been a veteran of some type of service to our country. We also recognized these veteran patients had unique needs that were in many cases linked emotionally to their wartime experiences.

In response we joined is a new pioneering program focused on respectful inquiry, compassionate listening and grateful acknowledgment of those who have served and sacrificed for our country. By recognizing the unique needs of America’s Veterans and their families, community hospice and palliative care providers, in partnership with Veterans Affairs staff, learn how to accompany and guide them through their life stories toward a more peaceful ending. It surprises many people to learn that 680,000 Veterans die every year in the US – that’s 25 percent of all deaths. Hospice providers have been working to help these heroes at life’s end.
